It takes place in another galaxy 1,000 or so years after humanity lost the location of the Milky Way galaxy.
There are two empires:
1) MesoSyrna Federation -- This is a capitalistic democratic group that is dominated by their military-corporate caste. The Meso are slowly losing control of their empire because a few of their planetary systems are becoming dissatisfied with the government control over daily life. Rebellion is very close to breaking out.
2) Daedalus Sphere -- This is an empire that owes its culture to strong neo-fascist ideals. There isn't a "racist" core to the group, but there exists a harsh anti-alien sentiment and a strong belief in manifest destiny. The DS are also very much into their own cultural expressions, having some of the best music, art and literature in the galaxy.
The Meso and DS had a massive war about 100 years before the start of the story. Unfortunately for both, the planets that held their historical records were completely destroyed and this loss will come back to haunt both empires.
Our story begins when an alien ship crashes into a planet in neutral territory near the borders of both groups. The readings on the ship reveal that it was flung through a rip in space/time and that the markings also show a bizarre flag -- the flag of the United States of America.
The race to discover the truth behind the ship will rock the galaxy to its core.
